I had Axel drag an armchair into my bedroom so he could sit somewhere comfortable while he explained things to me. He sat legs spread, leaning back against the chair and tossing his tennis ball across the room. It bounced against the wall and flew back to him, and he caught it without looking.

“You’re not supernatural at all, are you?”

“Nope. Completely human.”

“But you know Luce is a Dream Walker.”

“He used the term Noćnamora, but yeah. What is he, anyway? What kind of creature is he? All I know is he growls like an animal, and has tentacles.”

Axel blushed and pursed his lips.

Oops. Maybe shouldn’t have revealed the tentacle thing. For all I knew, tentacles were like sex organs.

Axel chose not to make the moment more awkward than it clearly was, probably for fear of me telling Luce that he’d teased me. Instead he answered my question.

“So he’s one of the earliest beings. Back when the world was first created, and magic was the only way to make anything, he was one of the first creatures to exist. Nobody knows where he came from, but we do know that the three major magic-wielding species evolved from... whatever he is. Dragons, mages, and witches. They all originated from the same line.”

“Wait. So dragons are real too!”

“You didn’t question vamps or shifters, but you’re surprised at dragons? Yeah, dragons are real. But you don’t see them in this realm because they can’t breathe through their nose in shifted form. So they end up breathing through their mouth. Which is a problem, what with the whole breathing fire thing.”

“Why can’t they breathe through their noses?”

“Not enough oxygen in the air for their tiny nose holes. They suffocate.”

“So Dragons, mages, and witches are all related? What’s the difference between a mage and a witch?”

“Uh, that’s really complicated... but to say it simply, mages pull magic from things, and witches create magic from within them. Mages can use whatever power they pull intuitively, but witches need a familiar or a catalyst to channel the magic. They hate each other because they think their form of magic is the best.”

“What’s a familiar? Is that like a shifter?”

“Kind of. Familiars do shift, but they also act as a conductor of the magic. The Blacks are all familiars. They shift to cats.”

“Ooh, the black cats that come by and eat the herbs?”

“Yeah,” he laughed. “Luna and Yen are the oldest, and then there’s Maximus, Freya, and Sybil. Their parents are just called Mr. and Mrs. because nobody knows their names. They’re like, a hundred years old or something. Their witches keep giving them new lives.

“Your cypress tree outside, he’s psychic and sentient. His name is Rehald. He’s been around for centuries, pretty much since the beginning of time. He almost died in a fire during the Salem Witch Trials, but Luce rescued him, took him to another realm to nurse him back to health, and brought him back when it was safe. Saoirse planted him here and enchanted the ground so it doesn’t run out of nutrients for him.
